Strong criminal defense vital for trucker indicted for 5 deaths

When a professional truck driver is involved in a crash that injures other drivers or causes deaths, public opinion and sympathy may understandably swing toward the victims in the wreck. While there may be cases in which the responsibility for accidents lays solely on the shoulders of the truck drivers, many cases may contain mitigating circumstances that led to fatal errors. When faced with seemingly insurmountable charges, many commercial drivers in Georgia may decide to call upon experienced criminal defense lawyers who can assist in fully investigating the details leading up to fatal accidents and can determine and effective defense strategies.

A recent case describes an accident that occurred in April of 2015. Seven women who were traveling to Savannah were passing through the center of Atlanta when they were involved in a deadly crash with a tractor-trailer. Five of the seven women passed away from injuries they received in the wreck, while the other two survived the accident.

The driver of the 18-wheeler has been indicted on five felony counts of vehicular homicide, reckless driving, not operating with due care and serious injury by vehicle. The truck driver has allegedly confessed to texting around the time that the accident happened. Authorities have reportedly discovered that he may have been receiving pictures of scantily-clad women during the time period during which the wreck occurred. However, it was not discovered that he was under the influence of substances at the time of the crash.

Truck drivers lead strenuous and tiring lifestyles that are many times a result of the expectations that their employers put upon them. Although there are regulations in place meant to ensure that truckers get enough sleep, these are often ignored due to employers' requirements. Those in Georgia facing similar situations may be able to mount effective criminal defense strategies, even against the most difficult odds.
