When domestic violence is an issue, a divorce attorney can help

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness month, this column would like to briefly touch on the different types of abuse that exist in some homes in Georgia and elsewhere. Domestic violence can go well beyond just physical abuse. No matter what type of violence one is experiencing in his or her marital relationship, a divorce attorney can help one break free.

Both men and women can be victims of domestic violence. It does not discriminate based on gender. Abuse from a spouse or significant other may be physical in nature or it can take a real toll on one's mental health. The five different types of domestic violence commonly seen are:

  • Psychological
  • Financial
  • Emotional
  • Sexual
  • Physical

Physical and sexual abuse are pretty straightforward. Emotional, financial and psychological abuse can come in many forms, all of which can make one feel worthless. No one deserves to feel that way.

In order to seek a protective order, one should have proof that there is some sort of physical abuse going on in the relationship. However, those in Georgia who are victims of severe emotional, psychological and financial abuse may have what is necessary to also achieve protective orders. It will all comes down to the details of one's case. At the end of the day, abuse that effects one on a mental level can be just as bad, if not worse, than abuse that affects one physically. No one likes to talk about the this issue, but it is a matter worth bringing up so that those in abusive marital relationships can escape the situation whether through divorce or other means.
