New year, new beginning: Divorce

Getting the year started off on the right foot may mean getting out of one's marriage. Everyone deserves to be in a healthy, happy marital relationship. When that is not the case, it is okay to cut the cord and file for divorce. January just happens to be the month that many couples in Georgia and elsewhere decide to start this process.

Why January? The holidays are done and people are looking for a fresh start. These are some big reasons why January sees such a spike in divorce filings.

Of course, this January experts expect to see an even bigger increase in divorce filings compared to previous years thanks to the new tax law. As it currently stands, those who complete divorce filings this year and who are ordered to pay alimony will benefit from an alimony tax deduction benefit. This means that they can claim their alimony payments to reduce their taxable income which can put more money in their pockets. Those who file now or who already have been through the process will get to continue utilizing this benefit. Those who wait to file or finalize their divorces until next year will lose out, as Jan. 2019 is when this aspect of the new tax law will be implemented.

Everyone has their own reasons for when and why they wish to file for divorce. Whether it is done in January or later in the year, it does not matter. One just needs to feel ready to get it done. Georgia residents can turn to an experienced family law attorney when they are ready to get the process started and finished as smoothly as possible.
